Type: Steel
Stats: 80 | 75 | 150 | 75 | 150 | 50
Abilities: Clear Body

Introduction

Registeel is a great Pokémon in the ADV 2U metagame, with great bulk, fantastic typing, and a decent movepool. It checks many Pokémon, providing a useful Normal- and Flying-type resistance mandated in the metagame by Choice Banded Dragonite and Tauros, as well as checking Rain abusers, and a handful of other threats such as Jynx, Tentacruel, and Solrock. Registeel's Attack and Special Attack are pretty low, making it hrader for it to abuse the free turns that it generates, but through good use of status and its expansive movepool it can become pretty dangerous. Registeel is very splashable due to its numerous positive traits, making it one of the best Pokémon in the metagame.

Sets

SubPunch

Registeel @ Leftovers
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Substitute
- Focus Punch
- Thunder Wave / Toxic
- Rock Slide

Set Details

This is Registeel's most dangerous set. Registel makes a good user of SubPunch due to its fantastic typing severely limiting what is capable of breaking its substitutes. Thunder Wave and Rock Slide alongside fit perfectly, providing it perfect coverage and a dangerous status that cripples most common switch-ins. The free turns which paralysis has the possibility of generating can be abused to set up a substitute if required, and Rock Slide's 30% chance to flinch makes this even more dangerous. Its Attack is maximised to make it as powerful as possible, since its Attack stat is only a meagre base 75, with the remaining EVs put into HP to maximise its overall bulk. This set fits well on offensive teams that lack a Rapid Spinner as this Registeel hits Cloyster and Omastar very hard, as well as pressuring them with status, although other teams can certainly make use of this set too. Toxic is an option over Thunder Wave specifically to cripple 2 of the best switch-ins to this set in Donphan and Quagsire, which are immune to Thunder Wave and take its attacks easily. When using Toxic, it's recommended to consider Hidden Power Rock over Rock Slide for reliability.

Curse + Explosion

Registeel @ Leftovers
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Curse
- Explosion
- Hidden Power Rock
- Earthquake

Set Details

Most common switch-ins such as Donphan, Venusaur, Physically Defensive Moltres, and Quagsire, aren't OHKO'd by an unboosted Explosion, but with a Curse boost will OHKO. Hidden Power Rock is recommended over Hidden Power Steel unless Moltres would be considered a more useful Explosion target.

Pivot

Registeel @ Leftovers
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Toxic / Thunder Wave
- Protect
- Hidden Power Steel / Hidden Power Rock / Rock Slide
- Earthquake / Brick Break

Set Details

This set focuses more on status spread and longevity, and fits better on balanced and stall teams that have a strong focus on spreading Toxic. Protect provides recovery in tandem with Leftovers and allows it to scout opposing Choice-locked opponents. The remaining moveslots are left to attacks, although moves such as Rest or a secondary status are possible uses of these moveslots too. Hidden Power Steel is STAB however HP Rock and Rock Slide alongside either move suggested in the second slot provide perfect coverage, and most importantly hit Moltres and Charizard super effectively. Earthquake is the most powerful option that provides effectively perfect coverage, though Brick Break is viable to hit Chansey and Tauros harder. Double status is also an option, letting it guarantee status versus the common core of Donphan and Venusaur, but requires careful use to make sure that the opponent's Pokémon aren't given whichever may be the less useful status affliction within that game.

Curse + Rest

Registeel @ Leftovers
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Curse
- Hidden Power Rock / Hidden Power Steel
- Earthquake
- Rest

Set Details

This set provides a dangerous win condition. It is less immediately threatening than the SubPunch set but shouldn't be permitted to set up for free. Hidden Power Rock is usually the preferred choice alongside Earthquake; the ability to hit Moltres super-effectively means that if it is weakened or if Registeel is given sufficient opportunity to set up, or if Moltres is paralyzed, since Moltres cannot OHKO Registeel without a critical hit (and rarely carries Will-o-Wisp), makes Registeel significantly more dangerous. This set is suited to slower bulkier balanced and stall teams which can function well in spite of this set being more passive than other options for a large part of the game. Registeel's immunity to Toxic in particular makes it a great Curse user, as does its great mixed bulk.

Other Options

Registeel's movepool is incredibly wide, so a variety of options such as a specially-attacking set, double status, psych up, counter, and so on are all available, although the sets given exhaust the best options for Registeel. Superpower is notable for being its best move outside of Focus Punch versus Tauros and Chansey. Dynamic Punch bears mentioning since due to the often slow pace of the tier and Registeel's great natural bulk and typing means that it does not mind the poor accuracy so much. Rock Tomb can be used for its speed-lowering effect but cannot even 2HKO physically defensive Moltres so it has little utility. Body Slam combines paralysis-spreading with attacking but it's very weak and unreliable. A Choice Band set could be used but Rhydon is superior in most circumstances. RestTalk, Seismic Toss, and manual weather setting are all moves that it can use fairly well, but they are generally less useful than any of the given sets, though certain teams might find them useful.

Checks and Counters

Donphan and Quagsire are the best options, with their high defense, Ground-type STAB, and immunity to paralysis. Nidoking is immune to Toxic and resists Focus Punch making it a good offensive answer to Registeel, but it hates Earthquake and goes down to Explosion, and over the course of the match goes down more easily than Donphan versus the common SubPunch variant. Fire-types are capable of doing great damage to Registeel but are usually hit back hard in return; physically defensive Moltres is probably the best Fire-type to take on Registeel. Fighting-types often make great checks to Registeel. Hariyama doesn't mind paralysis and can set up against Registeel with Bulk Up. Breloom, whilst hating status, can pressure Registeel in a variety of ways with Spore, Leech Seed, and its Fighting-type STAB, and in spite of being frail its resistances to Ground- and Rock-type moves makes it fairly easy to switch in. Although it is frail and hates paralysis, Medicham is a decent check due to how incredibly hard it hits with its Fighting-type STAB. Weezing is a great answer to the Curse set with Will-o-Wisp, Taunt, Destiny Bond, and Haze, however it cannot break Registeel's substitutes. Dusclops is immune to Explosion, has Will-o-Wisp, and often carries Earthquake allowing it to break Registeel's Substitutes, and is quite physically bulky, making it a decent check. Leech Seed users such as Venusaur, Exeggutor, and Sceptile make good checks to the Curse set, but are useless versus SubPunch variants. Likewise, Imprison Misdreavus walls Curse Registeel indefinitely, but is useless versus any variant with status. Steelix takes quite a bit from Focus Punch or boosted Earthquakes, but can Earthquake or Roar in retaliation. Finally, Scizor can set up with Swords Dance and Morning Sun versus Registeel, but dislikes paralysis.
