I want to talk about PPL (Pokemon Perfect League). Mister Tim encouraged me to have it again this year, so I think let's go for it. First thing's first is I definitely wanna hear your thoughts, concerns, opinions, etc. The first PPL didn't go super smoothly, but we've grown a fair bit in the meantime (and the amount of signups to the latest seasons is a very positive sign), in addition to the revamp to the medal system and the increased consistency in the season format.
For those not familiar with the League format, there are 6 or more Teams, represented by one of the Pokemon Types, with a Manager who 'purchases' the members of his team. The manager is given a sum of virtual money with which they are to 'purchase' their players; they can opt for a smaller total if they wish to play themselves.
Important things to discuss:
- When? Obviously, seasons are pretty much year round on PP, whilst World Championship, and in RBY, International League and the Cups, so co-ordination wise, to have a good amount of activity probably involves how it coincides with major off-site tournaments (SPL, WCOP, RoAPL, etc.)
- What Tiers?
Each week we could have
- RBY 1U (bo3)
- GSC 1U (bo3)
- ADV 1U (bo3)
- HGSS 1U (bo3)
- RBY 2U + RBY 3U + RBY 4U
- Random Meta (TBD in advance: discuss what metas to use beforehand, exact list of metagames will be released at player signups)
Retainment:
Should we have retainment from PPL 1? I'm erring against it but I'm all ears to discussion on this. I want retention to be more heavily involved so I want to design a retention system that increases player fidelity to a team (more similarity year on year).
My ideas:
- No limit on the number of players that can be retained
- Price of retaining a player is 10k or the price previously paid + 2k (whichever is higher). This is important to eventually force top players to be let go, but for them to have longer term team fidelity. Maybe make the price just the price from the previous tournament IF that player has zero medals whatsoever?
- A proportion of remaining funds passed onto the subsequent year. Either 3/5 * remaining funds, or 3k, whichever is lower, is passed onto the subsequent year. So it's a small bonus but it increases the cash flow just a little making retains a bit more affordable. As a consequence though, later introduced teams would recieve a slightly increased initial funds for their first PPL as a consequence.
Part of this idea is to have it like football (or whatever sport u like) teams, where players who even aren't good enough yet to be on a team can choose a team to support (the idea of a type is since there's not really anything we can tie the teams down to like a location, it's best to use them since there's plenty of them and most (new) players have a favourite). Throwing in plenty of retention and this becomes more feasible imo.
One thing I definitely want to do next time is to work with the managers more: make sure that they're clear on when they're available, make sure they understand how tournaments like this work (both the mechanics of it and roughly the concept behind how the auction works, auction strategy, etc.).
If you'd be interested in managing a team (whether or not you did last time) feel free to post that in here too btw
