    Hi everyone!

In a couple of weeks, some friends and I will have a Pokemon RBY tournament. After reading through many threads in this forum and all over the internet I'm left wondering, how to set up a good team based on the following rules we have. I hope you guys can help me out. =)

    The rules are:
    - No hacks
    - Pokemon LVL max 60
    - Trading with other players allowed
    - No legendaries

Due to this, I'm not allowed, to have multiples of TMs, such as thunder wave, etc.
When looking at all the team comps out there it seems that every team is running at least 2-3 version of some TMs and that in particular Pokemon like Chansey really need them to be worth using.

As of now, I think about using the following:

    1. Alakazam
    2. Tauros
    3. Snorlax
    4. Golem
    5. Exeggutor

I have already used T-wave on Alakazam, Psychic on Exegg and Rock Slide on Golem.

Can you guys help me out in finding the best for the 6th slot with the restrictions we have? =)

(I'm also open to change my team around)

If trading is allowed, why aren't you allowed to have multiple TMs? Start up a second game on a second Game Boy until you get the Body Slam TM again or whatever, trade your Pokemon over, learn Body Slam, and trade back. Now you have two Pokemon with Body Slam.

Trading with other players is allowed, I'm not sure if this would include trading with yourself. But, either way, I only have one GameBoy and one functioning version of the games.

You can still use big 4 with standard Chansey, Stun Spore Eggy and for example MonoLax. I would try and make a team as standard as possible under your restrictions. The challenge is to find enough ways to paralyze the opponent. With the big 4 you have 2 aside from Body Slam. Jynx is a potent lead that doesn't require TM's the big four use, and Slowbro doesn't either, but Slowbro probably needs a little more para support. Another route that comes to mind is Jolteon lead, you can use the Thunderbolt TM and let Chansey use Sing for an offensive lead game. And then Withdraw or Reflect Slowbro would be fine, not optimal in the last slot. Yhis also helps against the Alakazam your friends will surely use.

Or just use e.g. the MissingNo. glitch and duplicate TM's anyway. Don't forget to erase evidence like Hall of Fame xD ;)

So with a Jolteon lead this would look like:

    Jolteon [Lead]
    Alakazam
    Tauros
    Snorlax
    Chansey w. Sing
    Exegg

Is there a decent team comp without chansey?

From what I know of the people participating, only very few will actually look at what competitive Pokemon are, so I can expect some charizard and other stuff people like to use in a regular playthrough^^

Well even having multiple TM moves would be pretty suspicious don't you tink ;)

Well Jolteon is already pretty broken against teams that don't have good spread of paralysis, and Chansey alone beats most teams that don't have a sophisticated strategy too. Add Slowbro to that, it's another perfect 'noob killer'. I'd really suggest Chansey, but Zam is a fine replacement if you insist, and then you still have TM45 for it. Watch out for Snorlax though.

Thank you for the tips! :)

Do you have some movesets for the team your suggesting? (maybe with alakazam as I'd really love to use it)

Are you playing with Sleep Clause?

Are you playing with Double Team, Minimize, Horn Drill, Fissure and Guillotine banned?

Are you playing with tradeback moves from GSC banned?

These are crucial to the functioning of the meta as it exists in the (online) competitive Pokemon community. If they're not in play, then a lot of what you learn here is bunk.

No we don't have those rules, but seeing as it is a friendly competition I wouldn't rely on tactics that are considered cheesy^^

But I do see what you mean, that the general meta doesn't necessarily apply

Well, if a lot of people are ignorant of the competitive meta, it's entirely possible a lot of people won't consider sleep spam to be cheesy.

Some Pokemon I'd recommend for this kind of meta, notwithstanding your concerns:

Jynx (fastest 75%-accuracy sleeper, learns Blizzard without TM)
Hypnosis Persian (fastest sleeper, requires a GSC tradeback, learns Slash)
Alakazam (outspeeds all sleepers, can quickly KO many sleepers, learns Psychic without TM)
Tauros (outspeeds sleepers other than Gengar and Persian, is generally a good Pokemon - note that I wouldn't really recommend Fissure for Tauros)
Snorlax (Double Team + Rest is rather hard to break; for attacking moves I'd recommend either Body Slam + Earthquake or Amnesia + Ice Beam)
Dragonite (once it's set up Agility, is difficult to put to sleep or set up evasion against, requires no TMs for its standard Wrap/Agility/Hyper Beam/Surf set - note that it doesn't like facing stuff with Double Team already up)

Ultimately, it's up to you how you balance friendliness and power, but those are some things to watch out for. Also watch out for Fissure Dugtrio, though it's a bit luck-based for me to recommend it.

I will note that Thunder Wave isn't all that useful with sleep unrestricted - sleep is always better than paralysis.

It's very hard to have a nice competition / not use cheesy things, also for the opponent, if there are no well-defined settings. Accidental double sleeps and Dig/Fly glitch come to mind for example, and magic9mushroom's suggestions. They don't make the game nice to play. Without tradebacks, even Dream Eater Gengar is pretty dangerous as it can potentially sleep and kill everything in the game from the lead spot with something like Hypnosis, Dream Eater and two fillers like Double Team, Psychic, Night Shade et cetera. I'd just send your friends the standard OU rules (without legendaries if you wish) and have some nice games without having a lot of explaining to do during your tournament :)

Minus Freeze Clause, because it's not possible without mods.

Thank all you guys so much for taking the time to help me out :)

I'm gonna send my friend that organizes this event the rules to look over and choose what he wants to apply. I'm sure he doesn't want to overcomplicate things as the tournament is more for nostalgic reasons for most people (but there are definitely a couple ones that tick more like me :D)

So taking in what all you guys suggested
(Depending on how the rules will evolve) I take it that, in addition to what I already have, a jynx, sing chansey, dragonite, rest snorlax and possibly a lead joltean are good additions or substitutes to the team. Slobro would also be a decent choice although it does require sufficient paralysis coverage.

In the case of Slowbro, you need sleep either banned or restricted (i.e. Sleep Clause) for it to be any good.

Ah ok, good to know =)

What do you guys think of:

    Jynx

I don't have access to psychic

    Alternative 1:

    Jolteon

    2. Thunderbolt
    3. Pin Missile
    4. Double Kick
    Other Alternatives:

    1. Dragonite
    2. Chansey (without T-Wave, then might switch seismic toss to her from Alakazam)

    Alakazam
    1. T-Wave
    2. Psychic
    3. Rest
    4. Seismic Toss
    Snorlax
    1. Body Slam
    2. Rest
    3. EQ
    4. Double Team

    Exegg
    1. Sleep Powder
    2. Psychic
    3. Stun Spore
    4. Explosion
    Golem
    1. EQ
    2. Rock Slide
    3. Explosion
    4. ?
    Tauros
    1. Body Slam
    2. Hyper Beam
    3. Blizzard
    4. ?? (maybe fire blast?)

Zam should have Recover, not Rest.

Jynx should probably have Rest; Ice Beam or Mimic would be my picks for fourth (both are repeatable TMs IIRC).

If you're running Lax and Tauros, I'd suggest giving EQ to Tauros; it wants it more. Amnesia + Ice Beam is nice.

I'd suggest Fire Blast for Golem. The main reason it's not seen much in the meta is Starmie, for which Golem prefers Body Slam; without that around Fire Blast is flat better because it's more effective against Exeggutor and threatens burn on Tauros.

Chansey could run Ice Beam/Tbolt/Reflect/Softboiled, although if sleep's unrestricted you'll have to keep it away from sleepers.

Zam shouldn't be using Seismic Toss unless it's a lead; ReflectZam is very powerful, especially with fewer well-equipped Chanseys and Starmies around.

Oh yeah, that was an error, I meant to write Recover^^

Thank you so much for helping me out with this!

I think I'll wait on the sleep decision and depending on that take either Jynx (which I'm kind of excited about because I've never used it in any Pokemon game) or the Chansey set you suggested (which would make Zam the lead and I would give him seismic).

Again thanks a lot to everybody!

If I'm not too late, I wondering about using Dugtrio over Golem. Golem and Rhydon are at their best in a paralysis heavy & Zapdos-legal meta, which this will not be. If Fissure is legal though, Dugtrio can counter Electrics as Golem can, but also challenge Alakazam 1v1, revenge kill in general, and counters Jolteon just as hard while also not losing to Surf Raichu (which may be a thing if any of your friends have Stadium). Its speed and Fissure also means it has a ~1/3 chance to delete any Pokemon in front of it except Aerodactyl, Jolteon or Electrode, and Jolteon and Electrode lose to Dugtrio's Earthquake anyway, so you basically have a backup cheese strat to win games unless the opponent brought Aerodactyl.

If you're using Golem for the Rock-typing to absorb Explosion/Hyper Beam and wall Fire/Normal/Flying coverage, Aerodactyl itself might not be a bad pick here either if you have unused Rest & Fire Blast TMs. Charizard/Normal-type Birds get walled forever, Venusaur loses 1v1 without sleep powder, anyone else who thought about Fissure Dugtrio cheese will get dunked on, and you also wall any Snorlax with only physical moves like the one you're using. If you really wanted to be lame, you could teach it Fly, attempt to get it paralyzed, and then try to get it to FP while flying to make it permanently invincible.

Earthquake is the usual 4th for Tauros, and Gengar I expect will be popular in casual games so it'll be helpful against that, but Fissure combined with Tauros' speed could be used to give Tauros a gamble-to-win button, and if Double Team is legal, STAB Swift can help to secure kills against Double Team abusers.

Don't forget to EV train, you gain additional stats from beating Pokemon for experience instead of using the Daycare or Rare Candys. The stats only increase after level-ups normally, but you can put your Pokemon in the PC and pull it back out to make the Pokemon's stats recalculate with its current EVs. If I remember right the Daycare will also reset experience back to the minimum for its current level, so if you have any Pokemon at Lvl 60 you should be able to pair the PC trick and Daycare resetting experience to continue EV training without going over 60.

Hi Enigami, no you're not too late =)

I'm afraid I've already used EQ for Tauros, but utilizing Aerodactyl sounds really interesting!

Right now I 'm training up the following pokemon:

    Alakazam
    1. T-Wave
    2. Psychic
    3. Rest
    4. ? (I still have Seismic Toss TM)
    Snorlax
    1. Amnesia
    2. Rest
    3. Ice Beam
    4. Double Team (Not sure if it will be allowed, but I'm guessing it will, is it still the best if I'm also trying to use Amnesia?)

    Exegg
    1. Sleep Powder
    2. Psychic
    3. Stun Spore
    4. Explosion
    Golem
    1. EQ
    2. Rock Slide
    3. Explosion
    4. ?
    Tauros
    1. Body Slam
    2. Hyper Beam
    3. Blizzard
    4. EQ

For the last Slot I was thinking about Jynx/Jolteon but Aero sounds awesome!
Do you think it would fit in with the rest? Would you recommend a general change?
I'm not opposed to quickly rush trough another save game with a second version my friend can lend me to change some things up.

Also I haven't heard back from the one organizing this thing and since the event is in about 10 days I doubt he will change to much (maybe banning fly/dig glitches or OH-KO moves tops).

I'd keep Body Slam on Snorlax over Double Team until you get a word on Double Team's legality, and then use the Double Team TM when you know for certain it is.

You still list Rest instead of Recover on Zam, hope that's not intentional.

If you're keeping Golem, I wouldn't bring Aerodactyl, but if your friends are casual players and aren't bringing S-tier teams, it will probably be OK alongside Golem. If you do want to use Aerodactyl, Aero's moveset should be Double-Edge / Hyper Beam / Fire Blast / Rest or Sky Attack. I'd personally go with Jolteon, just Thunderbolt + Pin Missile at 130 base speed alone will be very threatening to the starter Pokemon, and a nice check to Slowbro too if anyone brings that.

For Golem's 4th, the only real options it has are Body Slam, Fire Blast and Substitute. Body Slam is mostly just for paralyzing Starmie & Grass-types, Fire Blast is for neutering Exeggutor's explosion and hitting it a little harder, and Substitute can be used to take advantage of paralysis (just don't forget Substitute does not block status in RBY)

Alakazam's 4th should be Seismic Toss if it's the lead, if non-lead Seismic Toss will still be good but Reflect could be used there instead, turning Alakazam into a lategame powerhouse as long as Psychic absorbing walls are out of the picture.
