  3. Tiers

View Introduction to Tiers if you don't know what tiers are. Pokémon Perfect tiers are named differently to those on Smogon. A numeral followed by the letter U, e.g. 1U, 2U, 3U, represents a main tier on Pokémon Perfect – the '1' of '1U' representing the tier level. For a tier to be a main tier, it must be balanced (nothing is too powerful and game-breaking) and diverse enough (include a variety of Pokémon and strategies). A numeral followed by the letter P, e.g. 1P, 2P, 3P contain all Pokémon that are deemed overpowered in the respective 1U, 2U, 3U tiers. The 1st tier level allows Pokémon that are banned in the 2nd level, and this process continues down. Read the tier list, and in-depth explanations of the tiers naming system and tiering system. Also check out our analyses for all tiers.

    Introduction

Mewtwo is a Pokemon very central to the Ubers metagame, and one of the few ways of handling Mewtwo is by using Explosion or Self-Destruct. Snorlax is not only a good user of Self-Destruct, but it is also the best Pokemon to exploit paralyzed foes in the metagame. Due to its natural bulk, and ability to use Self-Destruct, Snorlax is a very good Pokemon that checks a myriad of setup threats ranging from Amnesia Slowbro and Swords Dance Mew, to Amnesia Mewtwo.

    Sets

    Standard

    Snorlax
    - Self-Destruct
    - Hyper Beam
    - Body Slam
    - Earthquake / Counter

    Set Details

This set is designed to check Mew, Mewtwo, and a host of other RBY Ubers threats. Body Slam is STAB move that spreads paralysis, and Hyper Beam is here to finish off heavily damaged slower foes. Counter is here for checking Pokemon like Mew; if timed right, Snorlax can come in on a +2 Mew Hyper Beam, OHKO it on the recharge turn with Counter, and save Self-Destruct for a more important target such as Amnesia Slowbro or Mewtwo. Self-Destruct is obviously the focus of this set, and the whole finesse in using Snorlax in RBY Ubers comes down to how well you time the Self-Destruct. Due to its impressive bulk it can even check 999 Special Mewtwo by tanking one hit and then taking it out with Self-Destruct, though Snorlax needs to be at full HP for this to successfully happen.

    Amnesia

    Snorlax
    - Amnesia
    - Ice Beam
    - Rest
    - Reflect / Body Slam

This set can be a threat in its own right but is often overlooked in favour of Slowbro, which plays a similar role. The goal is to set up Amnesia and sweep with Ice Beam, so hopefully by the time you send it out, Mewtwo is heavily damaged and Slowbro or Chansey are gone (or frozen). One thing about this set is that if all else fails, you can at least try to engage Mewtwo in a freeze war! It's not an ideal situation to be engaging Mewtwo in an Amnesia war, however, since Mewtwo gets to 999 Special Attack one turn faster than Snorlax, and if it manages to get a critical hit, it's game over for Snorlax. Remember if using Body Slam, you don't want to paralyze Mewtwo, so don't use it carelessly.

    Other Options

A set of Amnesia / Thunderbolt / Ice Beam / Self Destruct is an option for Snorlax to take on Slowbro, but this set can't get past Chansey without sacking itself with Self-Destruct, but that just might open up a Mewtwo sweep, especially if the Chansey you used Self Destruct on was the Light Screen set.

An alternate set of Amnesia / Ice Beam / Body Slam / Self Destruct is also another option, albeit a less effective one, that can threaten a sweep with Amnesia, then possibly Self Destruct on opposing Mewtwo or Slowbro coming in for the Amnesia war.

    Checks and Counters

Nothing in RBY 1P really counters Snorlax—at least not the standard set. But the rule of thumb is the same as it is in RBY 1U; hit Snorlax hard and fast so that it doesn't get the chance to spread paralysis and set up a late-game Self-Destruct on a key member of your team. However, one clever way you can beat it is by baiting it into using Self-Destruct onto an undesirable target. If you can bait the Self-Destruct with Swords Dance Mew or Amnesia Mewtwo and can get it to waste the Self-Destruct on an incoming nearly fainted Exeggutor, sleeping Starmie, or the such, then you've beaten it.

The Amnesia set, however, is a different proposition and has a quite a few checks and counters. Slowbro, Starmie, Chansey, Mewtwo, and Mew can all take it on quite easily, especially if Freeze Clause is active!

in OO mention amnesia with tbolt+ice beam as coverage can deal with slowbro but plain can't take on chansey really. Also Amnesia/BoltBeam/Sdestruct or Amne/Beam/BSlam/SD are also sets that could work albeit are a bit gimmicky. Saying it has no other options is underselling it.

One issue I noticed is C&C. It discusses baiting boom, and nothing else, despite the set that an Amnesia set is listed. Firstly, it's still worthwhile listing things that have decent physical bulk and pose a threat in return (e.g. Egg, Cuno, Bro, probably other stuff). Mew and Mewtwo are worth a specific mention as they can chip away at it and/or bait an explosion, though it's obviously a very risky game to be playing, even if they've got Barrier/Reflect. As for Amnesia, Bro, Starmie, Chansey and Mewtwo and Mew are all notable as they fear little from Lax, especially if freeze clause is active.

On the topic of AmnesiaLax, maybe note somewhere that the potential for a freeze is a big part of the threat it poses. Also I'd never trust AmnesiaLax in a Mewtwo freeze war, since one crit=rip. You don't even have a time advantage either, since Mewtwo needs one less turn to max out its special

    good stuff

    Missed this.

    Again, "Special Attack" :V

Also, a crit doesn't necessarily mean it's over. You're thinking in new-gen mechanics, as with your Chansey analysis. A crit Ice Beam plus two non-crit +4 Ice Beams won't 3HKO +6 Snorlax (indeed, a crit Ice Beam plus three non-crit +4 Ice Beams usually won't even 4HKO, so Lax does get a chance to attack between Rests without a particularly-big risk of instant death).

What I'd be more concerned about is Psychic. Not only does Psychic get the crit + 2 non-crits 3HKO (and remember, Mewtwo has a 25.4% crit rate in RBY, so it's literally more likely than not that 3 Psychics will include a crit), but +4 Psychic usually 4HKOs +5 Snorlax and always 4HKOs +4 Snorlax so Special drops (at 33.2% per pop, also pretty frequent) threaten to lock you in a Rest loop (at which point you die either to more Special drops or a crit).

Pulling that trick against Ice Beam/Tbolt Mewtwo looks doable, if risky (double crit or freeze obviously means dead Snorlax). Against Psychic Mewtwo it's a long way past "not ideal" and well into "suicidal".
